Dynasty Warriors 9 – Our Pre-review Impressions (PS4 Version)

Posted by Shaun Player on Feb 14, 2018
Posted in: All, Articles, General. Tagged: Dynasty Warriors, Dynasty Warriors 9, KOEI, KOEI Tecmo, Omega Force, PC, PS4, Steam, Tecmo, XB1. 3 Comments

As you all may of noticed, Dynasty Warriors 9 released this week for Playstation 4, XBOX One and PC via Steam. However, even though we have had our hands on the game for a while before release, the sheer size of it and amount of content means we are still yet unable to produce our review for the game. So with this in mind, we decided to do a little “Pre-review Impressions” take on the game to hopefully give you guys an insight and if this game is for you or not until we can finish our full review. Note our experience is with the regular PS4 version.

So let’s start off. Dynasty Warriors 9 in and of itself is a completely new game style from KOEI Tecmo and Omega Force, offering an Open World RPG experience over it’s standard scripted battlefields. The game offers 13 chapters in total, each covering different major historical events within the Three Kingdoms period; such as the Yellow Turbans, Cao Cao vs Yuan Shao, and Battle of Chi Bi.

You start off with only a few characters unlocked, and can only access the first chapter being the Yellow Turban rebellion. Once you pick your character you are given an overview scene (with narration, that has odd inconsistent audio mishaps) giving you a sense of what is going on and what you will be up against in the coming chapter. Afterwards you are thrust into the intro of your character, with plenty of exposition of who you are and why you are there. After an initial tutorial quest to allow you to beat up some baddies you are pretty much given free reign of exploring China.

This is one of the main gimmicks of the game. The freedom to explore a vast open world while many battles and skirmishes are going on all around you. You will have your main questline to follow but there are also a bunch of side-quests (known as requests), most being just usual fluff where you are tasked with killing a small group of bandits, collecting certain materials etc. As you progress further into the chapter you will notice that many of the main quests have sub-quests scattered around nearby areas of China, which will help towards your overall goal of completing that main quest. These are far more engaging than the requests you will constantly see pop up throughout your journey.

However a big flaw of the game is, in the grand scheme of things these do not make much of a difference. If you are so inclined you can easily book it to the main quest’s destination and complete the chapter (or that part of the chapter). It all really comes down to if you are willing to play along with these sub-quests to pad out your experience and try and believe you are making an impact on the overall battle yourself. If you are inclined to just charge straight for the Main quest’s goal, then you definitely will not get enjoyment from this game.

Aside from the Quests and Requests, you can freely explore China at your leisure. It is a vast landscape of deserts, snowy mountains, green fields and jungles. There is a waypoint guide system that can help direct you to your chosen destination (or quest destination), but it very much varies if it actually wants to play ball with you, often leading you the wrong way if you directly follow it. The issue in this case is that it gets confused when you head off the pathways. Luckily there is always a visible icon along with a handy step metre showing you where your destination is, along with how far remains. You head straight for there and you’ll be fine.

China itself, an issue with it being so large, is that it is a very empty place. There isn’t a whole lot to do if you want to just go out and explore. There are checkpoint bases scattered around, which may or may not be controlled by yours (or a friendly) army. You can go out and hunt, though this is done so mundane you can just attack animals easily from a far with an arrow without them even noticing they are being hunted. You can also find specific locales that can be used as fast travel points, and other waymarks that you will often find wherever you traverse. Alongside all this there are villages, camps and a few major cities that can be found.

In the cities, camps, villages etc you will often find stores (and a bevy of people with Requests) where you can purchase items, craft stuff and the like. You can also have these places used as one of the many ways to fast travel. Which leads to another issue with the game. Once you have explored China a bit, you will start to rack up many fast travel points, and with this you’ll just end up playing each quest by instantly travelling to a point right near where you need to be. Defeating the point of the need of an open world in the first place.

Now let us acknowledge the elephant in the room. The over-use of the same weapons. Though it is true many characters share the same weapon, with the revamped combat mechanics, none of them are clones of each other. Each character has four types of special attacks, which are mapped to R1 + one of the face buttons. Each of these is unique to the weapon and character. These also lead into their own “Flow attack” combinations if you mash Square after performing one of them.

Dynasty Warriors 9 is no longer a tight packed action hack n slash game but has fully donned the RPG cloak. Where each character, officer and enemy has a level which constitutes to how strong (or weak) they may be. As you level up your stats will rise, along with you being able to allocate certain stat points yourself. Though strength is normally the best one to go for, to kill those baddies quicker. You’ll gain EXP from killing enemies, completing quests and finding new locations.

To wrap this all up, there is also a miriad of technical issues with the game, which thankfully are being patched out at a quick pace. These issues mainly include frame rate issues, textures not loading or popping in very late and other things. Hopefully in due time these will all be ironed out, this is after all what most (if not all) open word games suffer with on launch, and this is all new territory for Omega Force when it comes to developing these kind of games.

Do we recommend Dynasty Warriors 9? It’s still hard to fully say as we are still working through it to write our review, but as of our current impressions, we would say to be weary of it. The game has built the framework for something that could become great, but maybe not in this iteration. The combat is fun and fluid, with the story and battles feeling much more vast and epic as ever before. But you really have to try and play the game exactly as how they want you to, or you’ll just find it a cheese fest that is able to rush to the finish line without much work or effort.

Stay tuned for our review (hopefully) soon!

Via Twitter, KOEI Tecmo America have officially confirmed that Dynasty Warriors 9 will release with not only just a Japanese dub, but also an English dub and even a Chinese dub for an authentic immersive experience.

Our Chibitan was at the Dissidia Final Fantasy NT Fight Night in Cologne last saturday, for Koei Warriors: Conquerors.

Here’s what happened there:

Upon my arrival at the Meltdown E-Sports bar in cologne, there already was a crowd, waiting eagerly to enter in order to play the new Dissidia NT. The bar opened its door at 3pm GMT +1 and everyone kind of pushed in. We had to show our ticket, which were basically reservations for 2 hours completely for free, and we got a nice wrist band similar to the gamescom ones except they’re not showing your age and 2 vouchers for a drink of choice. It literally could have been anything. From a little coke to a big cocktail. We got a form for a giveaway of the Collectors Edition of Dissidia NT, which we had to fill out if we wanted to participate. If you do not win the Collectors Edition you also have a chance of winning Razor merchandise, like a headset.

In the front, you got a lot of stations for playing Dissidia NT against the CPU. You either could play all alone or with up to 3 people against the CPU. If you wanted to play competitive, you went into the back. 2 rows for 6 players were in the back, which played against each other in 3 matches. And at the wall there were 2 more stations for singleplayer. It’s needless to say that most people were gathering here.

12

In between those rows, was the evil unlucky wheel. 2 matches were played in default, the third was played with the unlucky wheel, which one player of either group span. The wheel showed which handicap the group gets.

The handicaps are as followed:

  • 2 Joker – No handicap
  • Ambush – Play with the controller behind your back
  • Legroom – Play while standing on one leg
  • Standpoint – Play without using the jump button
  • running wonder – Play while running on the spot
  • free from giddiness – While the game loads you have to spin around
  • Fistfight – Play while wearing fluffy gloves (they used oven gloves)
  • blind flight – Fight 30 seconds while being blindfolded
  • mandatory break – You have to wait 10 sec before participating in the fight

The team that won with a handicap on got some nice goodies, a sweatband or a key chain. Those who participated in the fighting at gamescom know exactly what they look like. Because it’s basically the same.

4

So after your 2 hours slot ended, you were welcome to stay in the bar and you still were able to play but you had a lot of waiting queues. When we left, we were greeted with a pleasant surprise by the staff at the door. We got T-Shirts with Dissidia on it. The same ones, the staff was wearing.

5

All in all, it was a great event, everything was for free, except for the travel to cologne which wasn’t included in the reservation, and the location was well chosen by Square Enix. The event lasted until 11pm GMT +1 by the way.

Hopefully they do more events like these.

Anyways, that’s all I got for you guys, see you soon.

In a surprise announcement from Nintedo in today’s Nintendo Mini Direct, we have been given the pleasure of knowing Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition will be making it’s way to the Nintendo Switch this Spring! It will include all of the content from Hyrule Warriors, Hyrule Warriors Legends and all DLC sets from both games in one package!

Along with this being truly the most definitive version of Hyrule Warriors, which now you can play the Legends additions in glorious HD, we will also be seeing a new outfit for Link and Zelda. Their Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild looks!

We have no more information aside that, and a nice looking trailer (embedded below), so if we will be seeing a new Season Pass for this game for even more content, or the actual release date – we will find out in due time. Until then, get done with Fire Emblem Warriors because Link is soon to be back in town!

Koei Tecmo’s current 2018 line-up!

With 2018 now officially starting, we can take a look at the not too distant future into the year and see what Koei Tecmo is releasing for us! Note this is only currently announced items, we won’t be going into rumours, speculations or wishes!

First up is Dissidia: Final Fantasy NT – A collaborative title between Square-Enix and KT’s Team Ninja. In similar vein to Dead or Alive, this is a 3D fighter game. But what switches things up that you get far more control over your character in a 3v3 environment. Characters and levels are taken from numerous Final Fantasy titles, from Cloud (Final Fantasy VII) to Noctis (Final Fantasy XV) to even Warrior of Light (Final Fantasy I).

Boasting an intense story mode not included in the original Arcade release, and massive amounts of competitive content, this is a great start of the Year for you PS4 owners out there!

Release: 31/01/2018 Worldwide
Platform: PS4 “Exclusive”

Next up, and probably Koei Tecmo’s biggest release for this year (so far), Dynasty Warriors 9. A lot of mixed feelings regarding this but it certainly looks like it has a ton of ambition put into this latest title to the Dynasty Warriors franchise. Boasting an open world China, a story spanning the entire Three Kingdoms period from start to finish and more characters than ever before!

Dynasty Warriors 9 will be bringing back high octane slicing and dicing to you guys worldwide in February.

Release: 13/02/2018 Worldwide
Platform: PS4, XBOX One, Steam

Now not an actual game, but continued support for one of the better titles released from KT last year. Fire Emblem Warriors DLC Pack #2 and #3 will be releasing in 2018. Included in both these packs, dubbed Shadow Dragon Pack and Awakening Pack respectively, you’ll be granted to a bevy of more playable characters, History mode maps, weapons and more! All included for free if you picked up the Season Pass or you can purchase these pack’s individually as they release (first pack already out) from your Nintendo devices eShop.

We don’t have solid release dates for these yet aside the month they will arrive. But judging how Nintendo deal with their release plans, we will likely find out a week before, if not THE week it releases. No doubt on a Thursday.

Release: Pack #2 (Feb 2018), Pack #3 (Mar 2018)
Platform: Nintendo Switch, New 3DS

The penultimate game on our line-up list, is A.O.T 2 (Attack on Titan 2 for you yanks) which brings up to 4 player cooperative naked giant slaying. Along with promising a more intense experience from the original game released back in 2016, you will also be able to create your own Scout and take him/her out into the online world to fight alongside other player’s Scouts against the giant menace.

With friendship systems, an anime focused story and well, neck slicing, this is definitely a game to keep an eye out for this March.

Release: 20/03/2018 Worldwide
Platform: PS4, XBOX One, Steam, Nintendo Switch

Last but not least, we have one for you JRPG lovers out there. If you are still lusting for more Gust goodness after Blue Reflection last September, or wanting to concluded the “Mysterious” trilogy then this will be a necessity in your collection. Follow the lives of twins Lydie and Suelle as they try to achieve their dream of running the top atelier for their kingdom; Adalett.

Expect beautiful Cel shaded visuals, corny dialogue and a story that’ll take you through all kinds of various synthesising antics. Be sure to get your anime style RPG on this March.

Release: 03/27/2018(US), 30/03/2018(EU)
Platform: PS4, Steam, Nintendo Switch

And that is it! All we currently know for sure that is planned for 2018 from the big guys at Koei Tecmo! As the year starts to make more progress we will definitely start to hear of a lot more coming our way. But until then, happy conquering guys!
