Hey everyone, many of you may of noticed we uploaded some game screenshots of an upcoming project. Specifically one we teased in our Q1 2014 reveal image. Though we haven’t yet made an official announcement for the game on here, you can consider this post as it!

The Three Kingdoms: Suffering of Sun Ce (working title) is a Horror Adventure game based on the events between Sun Ce and Gan Ji. The game is being developed by KOEI Warriors: Conquerors, and being made with the RPG Maker VX Ace game engine.

The screenshots shown which you can find at the end of this entry show an early alpha build of the early parts of the game. It is missing key art assets but we just wanted to show off something along with the announcement of the game.

The current confirmed characters are Sun Ce, Gan Ji, Da Qiao and Zhou Yu. Artworks will be coming for these characters, along with announcements of future characters and other features.

This will be our first official video game development, and we hope to bring more games to you guys over the course of the future. We would also like to note this will be a Free To Play game, so no purchasing required!

Let’s leave it at that for now. We will continue with news and such as time passes and development progresses. We would love to hear any feedback you have for this! We are very excited about this project, and love the idea of bringing something new to the Three Kingdoms series.

Toukiden is the newest installment of Tecmo Koei hitting the western shores.

It follows the story of the war between humans and demons, called Oni. The people fighting the Oni are called ‘Slayers’ and are said to be ‘demons fighting demons’.

The Demo starts with the character creation. Here you create your own character, with a limited selection of hairstyles and faces. It is similar to the creation in Dynasty Warriors Next, though you are not able to switch to any clothing as the clothing you acquire is the armor ingame.

1

In the beginning of the game you fight against a big Oni and the controls in fight are shown to you while doing so. Feel free to test everything to your hearts content as it really is hard to die in that fight. You then start in the story, you will be introduced to the first characters, Oka and Yamato. Those two will show you how the game and it mechanics work. You are also able to choose your answer at some points, but I’m not sure if that actually changes anything except for the characters reaction. All in all it is pretty friendly towards people new to this game. You get told what to do and get your first assignment right afterwards as there is trouble coming your way. In the mission, Oka tells you everything you must know about the missions and additional stuff.

The battlefield isn’t the same as it is in the Warriors titles. The ones in the Warriors titles are crowded with soldiers you just have to slay. In Toukiden the battlefield is restricted in several sections which aren’t all accessible at some points. Also, there are only a handful Onis on the field which have to be slain, though they hold much more than normal soldiers of the Warriors games. When you slay an Oni you have to purify it and get to collect items in doing so. They also drop Mitamas in some points, but I’ll come later to those Mitamas. Last thing to say about the field is, you also get to collect items laying on the floor and areas with a red colour have to be cleared for finishing your mission. Usually the time limit of the missions are 60 minutes which are by far enough. The clock is shown right under the map of the field.

2

Let’s move on to the games mechanic. The gameplay is rather simple. It is very similar to the gameplay of the Warriors titles. Square for normal attack and Triangle for heavy attack and Circle for the special attack. So not much to say to this one but to the more new stuff, for example ‘the slayers Eye’. It is activated by pressing Select. The view will get dark and you can see the weak points of the Oni you are fighting. Also you can see the life bar and the protection bar. It comes in handy when you fight really strong Oni. It also serves you to show you hidden things on the field you currently are.

3

When you’re finished with your mission it is shown brightly on your Vita. You will then get to the windows showing you the mission results such as Haku you earned. Afterwards it shows the window of the Materials you collected on the map. These can be used to create better weapons and armor or can be sold in the merchants store. You also need the materials to finish Quests which you get in the same place as your Chapter Missions.

6

Now I’ll move on to the last addition to the game and in my opinion one of the most important. Those are the Mitamas. The Mitamas are the souls of famous Warriors, who were devoured by the Oni. When you kill the Oni, which devoured them, they will be set free and aid you in your Mission of slaying the Oni. They’re important as they give you special abilities you can use to boost yourself in combat, such as increase attack, heal yourself or steal health from the enemy. The Mitamas will grow stronger when you use them in combat or when you go to the shrine and pay Haku so that Shikimi will make them stronger, you can also reset them there again. The stronger the Mitama grows the more effective his boosts get. It is confirmed that there’ll be more than 200 Mitamas in the game, you can collect.

8

9

The game also has an own Encyclopedia, as you already know this feature from the other titles of Tecmo Koei. The Encyclopedia can be seen when you talk to Shusui at the right side of the house, you go to get you Missions or talk to Yamato for training or checking your medals you can collect by solving different stuff.

10

Last thing I will tell you about the game is, you have your own house. You can save there, check messages from the other characters, look up what happened in story so far and change equipment or your hairstyle. When you progress in story, you will also get your own Tenko, which is able to collect random materials from one of the battlefields you unlocked by playing the story. It might get useful in the full game where the limit isn’t at 30 materials.

All in all my opinion of the game is that it really woke up my interest and that I’m sure that I’ll have a lot of fun with this game. The story sounds interesting and the gameplay is easy to understand. Though the Demo didn’t show that much of the stuff you will get to do in the game, it can make you want more if you like this type of games. It is worth a try as it is for free.

Have you ever wanted to hack and slice up hundreds of generic soldiers with the tap of a few buttons while you were waiting for the train? Tecmo-KOEI have answered your prayers with their first instalment of the Legendary repetitive hack n slash series Dynasty Warriors on the Playstation Vita. With it’s usual offering of many characters to decimate hundreds upon thousands of peons as stylish and easy as possible. Now to some, that could sound like a massive turn off. Sure it does come off as very repetitive and very much button mashing from start to finish, and yes that’d be true. But that is by far not a bad thing.

Screenie-1

Slash your enemies with devastating attacks.

For those of you who are unaware of the Dynasty Warriors series, it is your hack n slash fighting game set in Ancient China during the Three Kingdoms period. You select from dozens of playable characters to destroy everything you see on the battlefield by a multitude of Square and Triangle button combinations. The story itself is portrayed with still images, chat windows that are all voiced and narration of the progression of history. The game tries hard to stay true to the Three Kingdoms novel, but being a game it has many fictional plot holes also to spice up the fun factor. That is pretty much the series in a nutshell.

Dynasty Warriors NEXT tries to stir the pot by adding more strategic elements to the gameplay. To begin with in the Campaign, you will get the main story of the game where you’ll branch through episodes depicting various historical events and their characters involvement. You will then be thrown into a strategy screen, where you see a map of China, different coloured areas showing you which force owns what areas. You get to choose stratagems which are pretty much cards that allow special abilities to occur within battles such as attack increase, speed increase, etc. There are also non battle cards that may increase your gold count which will allow you to pay for more stratagems. Once you have done this, you will then have a choice of territories to invade, most cases you won’t have much freedom which ones as it is very linear to the story. You choose where to invade then you go to battle, which allows you on the pre-menu to choose a version of your weapon – which they all have different stats – equip items, and such. You can also find information related to the battle on this menu also, but most of it is needless as the objective is always the same.

Tap your way to victory!

Tap your way to victory!

Now you finally get to enter battle, where you can unleash your characters skill and might upon the unfortunate peons that swarm the landscape. Your goal most of the time is to either capture the enemy main camp, or take out the leader of the opposition. You can do this by just storming straight to the enemy main camp, or you can work your way there by taking various bases scattered around the battlefield which will strengthen your forces as well as weaken the enemies. You’ll find bases such as Supply Camps which decrease the amount of peons you have to kill to capture other bases, or dispatch bases that allow you to bring in reinforcements.

Within battles you will also come across features specifically made for the Playstation Vita and it’s special controls such as the touch screen and rear touch pad. These are known as sudden encounters, which could be from a dual with an enemy officer, where you have to swipe the screen in specific ways to defeat your foe, or tapping madly on your screen to defeating a few charging enemies. These are fun to start off with but they get dull and very repetitive quickly, and it is also unfortunate that you can’t turn off these encounters all together. Then pretty much rinse and repeat. If none of this sounds appealing to you then you really shouldn’t bother with Dynasty Warriors series at all

Create whoever you want with the in-depth edit mode.

For those that are, you’ll find this a good way to just pick up and play with yourself, or others over ad-hoc in small bouts for some mindless action. The graphics are slick and clean, the frame-rate stays strong throughout too, even when there are 100’s of soldiers on the screen at once. The soundtrack is mainly cheesy guitar which will get boring rather fast. It is strangely satisfying when you’re bored, tired or stressed to just mindless chop through tons of enemies. There is an almost limitless replay value as you can play Conquest Mode, which offers very much the same game as Campaign mode, but you have complete freedom of who to invade, build up territory levels to take down your enemy and overall just have random fun each time you play.

All in all, the game is very repetitive, but it’s that repetitiveness and mindlessness that is great to relieve stress after a hard days work or hard day at school. Can be played in both long and short sessions too. It may not be for everyone as it can get dull fast as it is very basic in the form of gameplay, and just mashing the same few buttons can get tiresome quick, but if you can get past that there is a very solid game with tons and tons of game to enjoy.
