This year (August 3rd to be exact) marks the 20th Anniversary for KOEI Tecmo’s Shin Sangoku Musou (or Dynasty Warriors 2 onwards for us westerners) series, and producer Akihiro Suzuki has spilled some news of what is in store.
In an interview with Famitsu Magazine, Akihiro Suzuki exclaimed he hoped to announce a new Dynasty Warriors Anniversary title in the near future, with more than one game coming. Suzuki also re-confirmed that there would be no Dynasty Warriors 9 Xtreme Legends, which rules it out as part of the Anniversary celebration releases.
“The [Dynasty Warriors 9] system itself isn’t suited to Xtreme Legends.”
Suzuki also liked the direction they took with Dynasty Warriors 9, but admitted that there was a lot of issues, resulting in them biting off more than they could chew. However he would like to build upon the critical feedback in perhaps a ‘Dynasty Warriors 9 II’ – much like Samurai Warriors 4 II – though this is purely his own opinion and not something currently in production.
Lastly Suzuki talks about that future numbered Dynasty Warriors titles may not be an open world, though he would like to try and incorporate more ‘Romance of the Three Kingdoms’ functionality to the game.
We should be hearing very soon about starting plans of the Dynasty Warriors Anniversary celebration, for now check out this lovely video featuring the titles over the years:

I’m really looking forward to Dynasty warriors 9 Empires (with improvements but maintaining the open world style)
